Should nonviolent criminals be allowed rehabilitation instead of prison?

Help Me Please! asked:

I am in a college, and I am writing a research paper my paper is about giving rehabilitation to nonviolent criminals instead of locking them up with violent criminals. For example, community service, house arrest, etc… So I wanted to know what people think do you agree or do you disagree and why? I am using your comments as primary research for my paper, so I wanted people to go into detail with your answers, nothing is right or wrong! I need your help to complete my research paper. Because I feel if we keep locking nonviolent criminals up with violent criminals the nonviolent criminal who wrote a bad check will be locked up with murders, drug dealers, or a rapists. So my paper is about finding ways to help nonviolent criminals so the same mistake will not be made again. Or ever worst the nonviolent criminals will go to jail and become violent by just be locked up with criminals. Thank You very so much for your help and concern :)

I agree. We need to explore other options. This will reduce prison crowding and expense, as well as promote true rehabilitation rather than turning a one-time petty criminal into a career criminal.
Community service could include public services like trash collection, etc. This would save the city money by reducing paid employees.

I think the best way would be to create “tent cities”. The so called nonviolent criminal could then work for the society during the day and retire at night to their tent. The problem is that we need to make prisons a place people do not want to go to.

Non-violent criminals need established and effective rehab, other than that, leave the murderers, rapists and paedophiles in prison to rot.

i definitely agree with that position, non-violent crimes should be given the kind of rehabilitation that is needed for them not to repeat their deeds, they should be separated from violent criminals.

Personally I feel that non violent criminals should be rehabed because the entire prison experience can a terrible one. Although I also feel your prior record (offenses) should be taken in consideration because without punishment crime will not be taken seriously! But in reality the prison system doesn’t do too much seperating of the general public which makes this subject so difficult! Yes they should be punished by the prior records being the deciding vote and where and what type of punishment should be handed down…
I also agree with the “3 strikes your out” You may begin to realize that after 2 offenses) ones that can be be rehabed for-something through counseling-therapy) you may look at your life and make life changing descisions or end up in the prison system that will change your entire life forever.
Sorry I have mixed opinions hope I helped!
Did I a little bit?
