Why do people with addictions have a choice of treatment?

Robert R asked:

I watch Intervention on TV, and it amazes me that people with drug and alcohol problems are given the choice to go to rehab…..Obviously these people are not in their right mind…..so why do they get the choice? I am not saying food addictions or smoking should lead to your rights being taken away, but drugs and alcohol alter a persons mind to the point where I believe they can not be considered competent to make choices.

It is medical treatment. Unless a person is an IMMINENT danger to themselves or someone else they can not be forced as is with any for of treatment.

they have to want help and to get off the drug/alcohol or after rehab they’ll be right back on it. it’s hard and it takes work and they have to be willing to do that. have you ever tried to teach a kid something they don’t want to learn? kinda the same.

Because forcing a person to do something never works. They have to want treatment.

Because a person needs to want the help. Also the beds that are available don’t meet the demand. Programs want to take those that want to be there to be successful rather than give a bed away to a person who is coerced, and likely to break rules, and wreak havoc by sneaking in contraband, and its negative to those who want the help that are there. You need to change people places and things.

In my state, DE there are 200 beds for drug/alcohol, the need for beds is 4000.
