james w asked:

É Sylvester Outley knows the harsh realities of drug addiction and street life, but he also understands the power of transformation. Once one of the ten most wanted criminals in Texas, Outley, a 1969 Goshen College graduate now is founder and director of SELF Inc., one of the largest drug rehabilitation programs in Philadelphia, Pa.

Outley, along with Ed Î57 and Theo Hartzler Yoder Î58 of Archbold, Ohio, and Kathleen Zehr Î40 of Lowville, N.Y., will receive Goshen CollegeÎs most prestigious alumni award Ë the Culture for Service Award, named after the collegeÎs motto Ë during Alumni Weekend Oct. 4-6.

Outley will talk to students and the public in a convocation at 10 a.m. Oct. 4 in the collegeÎs Church-Chapel; his speech is titled øFaith Works.Ó During the convocation, two Goshen College students will receive Barnabas Servant Leadership Awards for their on- and off-campus service to others.

By age 30, Outley had been arrested 86 times for drug involvement and swindling, and was eventually sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in 1955 Ë years of paradox which he later said were dehumanizing, yet gave him self-understanding, allowing him to transcend drugs and gain meaning in life.

He earned his G.E.D. and graduated from Goshen with a social work major. He earned masterÎs and doctorate degrees before founding the Socio-Emotional Learning and Family Center in Chester County, Pa., a therapeutic residential program for criminals, as well as Outley Professional Services, an outpatient drug and alcohol facility in Philadelphia, which became SELF.

SELF now has a $4 million annual budget, encompassing emergency shelters, peer outreach, transitional housing and community revitalization programs. More than just sobriety training, SELF teaches that addicts must use the basic life principles of love, respect, truth, honesty, care, compassion and forgiveness to rebuild individual lives.

OutleyÎs work in transforming the cityÎs shelters from havens for addiction and crime into bases for recovery and wellness has become the model for PhiladelphiaÎs entire shelter system. And SELF continues to allow people to realize their full potential as øhumans made in GodÎs imageÓ by rebuilding their lives Ë one at a time

Ok I was a pretty good soldier. I was respectfully and all the other hooah bs. I unfortunately got caught up with the wrong crowd and CID called me in and asked me have I used any drugs in the army? I thought I would be honest which is one of the 7 army core values and I said I did. I told them I used cocaine big mistake but I havent done it since then. My old unit was crazy about drug tests and I took 14 within my first 5 months of being there. I was never told I pissed hot and CID told me I never pissed hot or I would have a flag by my name which I didnt. I ended up getting kicked out for drug abuse but I never pissed hot. So if I say I killed 20 people are they going to arrest me for murder or something? I was never offered the drug rehabilitation program and even though I was getting kicked out I was still worked my ass off! I tried to reenlist but the army recruiter told me to get it waived since there is no record of me pissing hot how would I go about getting my code 4 waived

SB1 asked:

Here’s a little background: my mother in law is 42 and has been married four times. Twice to the same man. There are three grown children from the first marriage and one nine yeah old child from the second. She was living with the man she has been divorced from twice. He got deployed and left her there. Since he has left things have gotten crazy. She has slept with several other guys–she does nothing to hide it and even has mentioned it in front of several people. She’s addicted to pain pills and smokes weed regularly. On top of that she has been drinking-not just drinking, but getting drunk every other night. Anyone is allowed to watch her son–if she bothers to get a babysitter; lately she’s been leaving him at home by himself all night. Last time she watched my two year old I caught her drinking at a bar while my daughter was being watched by a 13 year old girl I didn’t know. She’s never been a wonderful role model or anything but it’s been over the top lately. She is no longer allowed to keep my daughter unsupervised. Her boyfriend–or ex-ex-husband –sent me a message on Myspace saying he wanted to talk to me and it was important. I know it’s about her. I don’t care for this woman at all; there are other examples of her behavior I don’t care to list even if it is anonymously online. When he asks me what’s been going on should I lie to him? Personally I think she is an unfit mother and her child should be taken away from her while she is sent to a drug rehabilitation center. She is living in his house, doing drugs, partying, having men sleep over. My husband thinks it would be wrong for me to lie. But should I be the one to tell him? What should I say?
Can a report to DFAS be anonymous? Honestly I want to do something but I don’t understand why none of HER family will step in.. my husband, his sister, his dad, friends…

Shouldn’t our “representatives” be proposing the legalization of all drugs, and the tax, regulation, sale of all natural plants just like alcohol… for instance you could go to the weed store and buy pot and magic mushrooms. Soft drugs which are less harmful than alcohol if you go do your homework.

For the hard drugs like cocaine and heroin I believe addiction should be treated as a medical condition instead of criminal condition and that addicts should be able to receive a sufficient supply from their doctors and also have real drug treatment availible for these people if they so desire.

Not only would the legalization of drugs be the humane and honest thing to do, it would also take the profits out of the hands of violent criminals, and open totally new avenues of business. The current policies do more harm than good and fund corruption and violent organized crime.

If you really want to “save” the country, and get the nation back on a sound fiscal economic course this is better than anything these politicians who merely support the status quo with their failed policies.

Freedom and Enlightenment for all.
What do you propose Jessica? More of the same old failed stone age policies?
Fact is the economy could be vibrant and strong, but your politicians make too much money off illegal drugs and organized crime. Not only that your failed policies have done nothing at all to decrease drug use or the supply of drugs to those that want them. Your policies fund gangs, organized crime, and corrupt politicians.
Killer Queen, you’d have to eat like 640lbs of what’s commonly known as the magic mushroom to reach a toxic level. Go do your homework before you make idiotic statements… true certain kinds of mushrooms can kill you outright, but that’s not what they want.
You can not agree with it all you want, but I’ve yet to see anyone come up with a logical rational alternative, or show that the current policies are working. We’ve tried your way, and Prohibition doesn’t work. It didn’t work in the 1920’s and it doesn’t work in 2008.
I also support legalized and regulated prostitution. It has nothing to do with me wanting a prostitute. I also assure you I’m not on drugs nor addicted to anything, but I’m no choir boy I’ll admit that.
FugQ2, I know all kinds of people in all levels of society who have or do smoke marijuana. Even Obama admits to inhaling frequently and even though I don’t agree with the politics of either party he’s obviously a very driven person.
Weird Wendell, the taxation of legal drugs would more than fund treatment for hard drug users, and it wouldn’t cost much to prescribe them their junk if that’s all they wanted.

I agree with you on about people that would kill themselves on drugs, it’s not like we don’t already have enough stupid people in the country. If that’s their goal, let them do it. If you like drug gangs, political and police corruption, and paying $30k+ a year on average to lock people up for smoking a plant, then you need to start funding your own insane policies.
